The Indonesia Locally Managed Marine Area Foundation’s (ILMMA) mission is to test and replicate a community-based, sustainable, and fair natural resource management model for better management of coastal areas and small islands in Eastern Indonesia. With recent support ILMMA significantly expanded the number of locally managed marine areas (LMMA) in Eastern Indonesia. This award provides support to ensure these communities are effectively managing their LMMA by securing district government approval of established LMMAs, implementing learning exchanges, establishing sustainable livelihood options, and documenting the role of LMMAs in improving fisheries management in Eastern Indonesia.

The Indonesia Locally Managed Marine Area Foundation (ILMMA) will strengthen the coastal marine resource management in Papua and extend its work into the Moluccas. Activities will include convening planning meetings with communities; consultations with local government on establishing no take zones; and monitoring of fish biomass and fishing effort in priority areas.
