Established in 2007, the Right to Information Initiative is Nigeria's foremost organization promoting open, democratic government through education, partnership, and mobilization of support for the 2011 Freedom ofInformation Act (FOrA). The award promotes openness and transparency in public sector institutions by strengthening their capacity to meet citizens' demand for information. It assists select institutions in effecting changes in their architectures and operations in order to improve the availability of and access to public information. Foundation funds are used for (a) training and mobilizing high-level and mid-career-level officers of two target agencies; (b) empowering relevant oversight bodies to monitor the agencies; and (c) strengthening advocacy for accountability.
The purpose of the grant is to promote the effective implementation and compliance by key public institutions of the provisions of Nigeria’s Freedom of Information Act through training and information dissemination.
