ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA — The Centre for Independent Social Research (CISR), founded in 1991, is Russia's leading independent, non-university-based sociological research institute. With its long track record of research, training, and publishing, CISR has played a key role in efforts to build a new sociological profession in Russia that is politically independent and open to international scholarly interchange. MacArthur has supported CISR since 1995 under the Foundation's Russian Higher Education initiative. The recommended grant will be used to seed the Centre's new endowment, which will help set CISR on a path to long-term financial sustainability.
