A project by the Center for Universal Education at the Brookings Institution provides an alternative and complementary approach to existing methods of evaluating education quality around the globe. The Breadth of Learning Opportunities initiative originated with the MacArthur-supported Learning Metrics Task Force, which sought to offer recommendations for measuring learning globally that would not result in narrowing of curriculum and instruction. The initiative provides tools to measure whether opportunities are provided for learning across a diverse group of domains and how key components of an education system (e.g., curriculum, teacher supports, school resources) align to support students’ optimal learning.
