Methane from Agricultural Ammonia Production
July 10, 2019 | Grantee Publications | Climate Solutions

A report from Environmental Defense Fund and Cornell University finds that ammonia fertilizer production generated roughly 100 times more methane than the industry self-reports. Researchers, supported by MacArthur grantee Environmental Defense Fund, equipped a Google Street View car with a methane sensor to gather data on roads downwind from the plants, which represent over 25 percent of ammonia fertilizer plants in the country. They call for further study to expand the sample size and investigate where in the process the emissions occur.
