The Amazon's ecosystem is being rapidly altered by a wave of new hydropower development, according to a report by the Florida International University Insitute of Water and Environment. The MacArthur-supported report finds existing dams have already fragmented the tributary networks of six of the eight major Andean Amazon river basins. With 671 newly discovered fish species inhabiting the Andean headwaters, dams threaten biodiversity in the region as well as altering river channels and floodplains.
