The 2012 Chicago Council Survey reveals that Americans have grown less concerned over the last decade about large numbers of immigrants – legal or illegal – coming to live and work in the United States. The brief, issued by the MacArthur-supported Chicago Council on Global Affairs as part of the Foreign Policy in the New Millennium report, found that 40 percent of Americans consider immigration a “critical threat,” the lowest number since 1994. Fewer than ever recorded in the survey’s history (53 percent) say that controlling and reducing illegal immigration is a very important foreign policy goal for the United States. The report showed that increasing numbers of Americans support maintaining and increasing current levels of immigration.
