Mihari fishermen

More than 100 leaders of fishing communities from all over Madagascar took place in a recent MacArthur-supported MIHARI network forum to promote local management of marine and coastal areas and resources across the country. The concept of local managed marine areas is spreading in Madagascar, with more than 100 community associations engaged in managing marine and coastal areas and more than 11 percent of inshore areas under some form of management. Three government ministries took part in this year’s forum, and indicated the government is working to develop legislation to better recognized the managed areas and secure the rights of traditional fishing communities to manage these resources.
