President Obama has announced new commitments to reducing the world’s stockpiles of nuclear weapons and preventing their spread, goals which have been advanced by MacArthur grantees since the mid-1980s. The President said that all nations must strive to rid the world of nuclear arms and that the U.S. has a "moral responsibility" to lead. Specifically, the President called for strengthening the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, ratifying the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, and cutting the size of U.S. and Russian stockpiles by negotiating a follow-on agreement to replace the 1991 Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START). This agenda is closely aligned with the objectives of the Nuclear Security Project, which is spearheaded by MacArthur grantee the Nuclear Threat Initiative and led by George Shultz, Sam Nunn, Bill Perry, and Henry Kissinger.
