Nigeria HIV

After a 12-year legal battle, the Lagos State High Court handed down a landmark decision in the first ever HIV discrimination lawsuit in Nigeria. The MacArthur-supported Social and Economic Rights Action Center (SERAC) filed the suit in 2000 on behalf of Mrs. Georgina Ahamefule, whose termination on the grounds of her HIV status was found to be unlawful. The decision provides a precedent for applicants who have suffered discrimination on the grounds of their health status. SERAC is a winner of the MacArthur Award for Creative and Effective Institutions.
