Cook County is one of eight jurisdictions receiving additional funding from MacArthur’s Safety and Justice Challenge to implement reforms to make the local justice system fairer and more effective. With an additional grant of $1.85 million and technical support through the Challenge, Cook will work to safety reduce the jail population, divert nonviolent offenders from the court system, and track efforts to remind defendants of their court dates. This work will build on existing efforts in Cook County to reform its bail practices and implement other changes to create a fairer system for Chicago’s communities, individuals, and families.
