The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights officially agreed to review the 2004 murder of  Nadia Alejandra Muciño Márquez (announcement in Spanish), making it the first time the Commission will scrutinize the systematic violence against women in Estado de Mexico. Comisión Mexicana de Defensa y Promoción de los Derechos Humanos and Oficina de Defensoría de los Derechos de la Infancia, both MacArthur grantees, are representing Muciño Márquez’s family. The case is emblematic of feminicide in the state which has one of the highest rates of feminicide in the country, and a comprehensive analysis of government violations is expected to help determine the state’s culpability in the miscarriage of justice.
