This fall, with support from MacArthur, nine universities worldwide are welcoming the first students for new Master’s in Development Practice degree programs. MDP programs offer interdisciplinary training based on the curriculum recommended by the Foundation-supported International Commission on Education for Sustainable Development Practice, including the natural sciences, social sciences, health sciences and management. Students also participate in summer field training programs. Columbia University, home to the flagship program, has already expanded its program to accommodate a 45 percent increase in enrollment since the first class in 2009. Columbia students recently met UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon while completing field training at a Millennium Village in Mwandama, Malawi.
