A six-month energy efficiency competition that engaged residents of Chicago's Humboldt Park and Logan Square neighborhoods resulted in an average 20 percent reduction in electric, gas, and water use, the city announced. The competition was conducted in partnership with the Hispanic Housing Development Corporation, Enterprise Community Partners, and the University of Chicago, all MacArthur grantees. More than 750 residents across more than 500 units participated, attending workshops where they learned about different ways they could cut down on energy use. They collectively realized $54,000 in savings. The owner of the winning building, which saw a 34 percent energy savings, will receive $25,000 to be reinvested into the property.
