ACOS Alliance

The Overseas Press Club Foundation (OPCF) works to improve the media’s understanding of international issues and to raise the quality of news-gathering efforts in covering the world. A Culture of Safety (ACOS) Alliance, a project of OPCF, promotes the safety of independent and local journalists reporting from high-risk environments and conflict areas around the world. The ACOS Alliance is a coalition of news organizations, freelance journalist associations, and press freedom NGOs working together to champion the highest standards and best practices for the safeguarding of international news reporting. This grant supports the implementation of the ACOS Alliance’s safety initiatives, with special emphasis on the Alliance’s work on behalf of journalists in Ukraine and Russia. The intended outcome is a news industry that values and prioritizes the protection of those risking their lives to provide timely and accurate reporting from dangerous places.

The Overseas Press Club Foundation pursues a broad mandate to improve international reporting. The ACOS (A Culture of Safety) Alliance, one of its many projects, was formed in 2014 to promote the safety of freelance and local journalists reporting from hostile environments and conflict areas. The ACOS Alliance coordinates and leads a coalition of news organizations, freelance journalists’ associations, and press freedom NGOs to develop standards, protocols, and trainings to ensure the safe practice of international reporting. This award supports coordination activities, training workshops, and safety initiatives of the ACOS Alliance. The intended outcome is a news industry that values and prioritizes the safety of those often risking their lives to bring accurate and on-the-ground reporting from dangerous places.

A Culture of Safety (ACOS) Alliance is one of its many projects, and was formed in 2014 to respond to the growing safety threats faced by journalists working in hostile environments. This award supports ACOS Alliance in its work with commissioning editors, freelance reporters, news organizations and press associations to develop and promote principles, best practices, and industry standards for ensuring journalist safety. The goal of this work is to improve relevant and effective safety training and minimize unnecessary risk-taking in the field.
