Human Development Initiatives (HDI) is a Lagos-based nonprofit organization that began operations in 1997 with a mission to improve human development by empowering vulnerable groups to address their needs and concerns. With this award, HDI monitors and advocates for accountability in the flow and use of the Universal Basic Education Commission funds in Lagos State. Using lessons learned and tools tested in their earlier award, HDI strengthens the advocacy skills of community groups, including School-Based Management Committees and Parent Forums, to track funds and  hold public officials to account. The project is expected to strengthen community structures for accountability and complement existing On Nigeria education accountability efforts. This award is part of a larger package of complementary awards that is expected to increase transparency in education finances in select states, strengthen local accountability practices, and contribute to a reduction in corruption.
