United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR)

UNO SAT, the Operational Satellite Applications Program (UNOSAT) of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research, is a center of excellence for satellite imagery and geospatial analysis within the UN system. UNOSAT utilizes geospatial technologies to address critical international issues in the areas of human rights and security, humanitarian relief, and territorial development planning. The award enables UNOSAT's Human Rights Mapping Service to 1) provide geospatial support to UN and international human rights organizations, such as the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and others, in the form of analysis of satellite imagery and map or data production integrated into investigations; and 2) engage in capacity building and tool development to support the global human rights community. Award money for this one-year tie-off grant supports a portion of staff salaries and the purchasing of satellite images.

The United Nations Institute for Training and Research Operational Satellite Applications Programme (UNOSAT) will use MacArthur funding to supply operational and investigative support for human rights situations to the UN Secretariat, UN sister agencies, non-governmental organizations, and other international organizations. The project provides satellite analysis capabilities to these human rights entities, strengthening international human rights investigations and increasing the likelihood for action by the international community in the face of mass violations of human rights.
