Getty is a cultural and philanthropic institution dedicated to the presentation, conservation, and interpretation of the world’s artistic legacy. The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture is the only national museum devoted exclusively to the documentation of African American life, history, and culture.  As anticipated when MacArthur and other organizations jointly purchased the Johnson Publishing Archive (“JPA”) from the bankruptcy estate of the Johnson Publishing Company (“JPC”), MacArthur donates its ownership interests in the Johnson Publishing Archive (JPA) and the business records (and all intellectual property rights therein) to each of the Getty and Smithsonian in equal shares in accordance with the Transfer Agreement dated July 22, 2022. The JPA consists largely of a collection of iconic photographs, memorabilia, magazine covers, and other items that the JPC owned, collected, or licensed over the course of many years of business in publishing Ebony and Jet magazines and other business activities. The recipients agree to be responsible for the preservation and digitization of the JPA to preserve the JPA for the public good and make it available to the public.
