2023 (2 years)
$500,000

The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) is an independent policy research organization registered under the Government of India’s Societies Registration Act 1860. The award provides general operating support to CSE to strengthen its various programs. Previously, through the Foundation’s support, CSE’s public advocacy and research efforts have delivered consequential results. These include championing equity in climate change negotiations, supporting sustainable mobility practices in cities, and launching a water literacy program to engage the public. Its programs have achieved important public health outcomes by strengthening regulatory oversight in the use of antibiotics, pesticides, and heavy metals.

$1,200,000

The Center for Science and Environment (CSE) is a leading not-for-profit policy research and campaign institution that focuses on air pollution control, natural resource management, climate change, and sustainable development. CSE is one of India’s top climate think tanks and has to its credit several high impact policy studies and campaigns, which have contributed to national policy debates at highest levels. With this award, CSE is developing scaled up approaches to combat air pollution in Indian cities, by promoting the use of energy-efficient, low-carbon transportation strategies. The award builds on an earlier pilot phase, in which CSE supported federal action to combat air pollution, and assisted municipal actors in three cities to develop clean air action plans.

$506,000

The Center for Science and Environment (CSE) is a leading not-for-profit policy research and campaign institution that focuses on air pollution control, natural resource management, climate change and sustainable development. CSE is one of India’s top climate think tanks and has to its credit, several high impact policy studies and campaigns, which have contributed to national policy debates at highest levels. In Paris, India committed to reducing the energy emission intensity of its gross domestic product (GDP) by 30 to 35 percent by 2030 from 2005 levels. To achieve this target, it is critical to address the issue of rapidly growing urban emissions, much of which is on account of growing public preference for private cars, lack of efficient and accessible public transport systems and poor fuel-efficiency standards in use. This award builds on CSE’s ongoing work on air pollution control and climate change to pursue action for energy efficient and low-carbon transportation strategies in Indian cities. The award supports CSE to pursue development and implementation of appropriate legislative, judicial and regulatory practices and building public awareness and support for expanding the use of energy-efficient public transport systems.
