Grants

2017 (1 year)
$600,000

The Natural Heritage Institute (NHI) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization dedicated to restoring and preserving natural functions in major river basins. Its work in the Mekong is focused on transforming the hydropower development plans for the entire Mekong River basin by highlighting alternatives for siting, designing and operating proposed hydropower projects. If implemented systematically, these alternatives will maximize the current flows of water, sediments and nutrients and contribute to maintaining its extraordinary biological productivity. This award completes NHI’s planned work in Laos and Cambodia by finalizing development scenarios to keep the last unobstructed remnant of the entire Mekong River system – the Xe Kong tributary – running freely from the headwaters to the sea.

2014 (3 years)
$500,000

The Natural Heritage Institute’s (NHI) mission is to protect and rehabilitate major river systems that are impacted by dams. The grant supports their efforts to transform hydropower development plans in the Mekong river system by highlighting alternatives for siting, designing and operating existing and proposed dams. If implemented systematically, these alternatives will maximize the current flows of water, sediments and nutrients and contribute to maintaining the Mekong’s extraordinary biological productivity.
