Chicago, Illinois

Grants

2019 ( 8 months)
$50,000

Founded in 1979, the League of Chicago Theatres (League) is an alliance of theatres to support, promote, and advocate for Chicago’s theatre industry. As part of the Year of Chicago Theater, the League will create a cultural asset map of neighborhoods on the South and West Sides of Chicago. Teams of artist-researchers will meet with community stakeholders, conduct research into neighborhood assets, and hold public engagement programs (workshops, listening sessions) that will inform the research. Artists will present the collected data in a creative map format.

The League of Chicago Theatres Foundation supports, promotes, and advocates for Chicago theater locally, nationally, and internationally. The League has 237 member companies ranging from the largest nonprofit theaters, like the Goodman and Chicago Shakespeare, to the smallest such as About Face Theatre and Gorilla Tango Theatre. This award renews the Performing Arts Venue Fund, which strengthens the capacity of Chicago’s theater community by supporting physical improvements to nonprofit rehearsal and performance spaces used by arts organizations in Chicago. Improvements may be related to accessibility for disabled persons and/or licensing requirements.
