Founded in 1956, the Joffrey Ballet (Joffrey) is Chicago’s largest dance organization, presenting more than 55 shows annually for over 110,000 patrons at the Lyric Opera House. The Joffrey works to achieve its mission through its mainstage dance company, which performs classical and contemporary dance in Chicago, nationally, and worldwide; its Academy of Dance, which serves more than 2,000 aspiring dancers of all ages; and its Community Engagement programs that reach over 2,000 students in Chicago Public Schools. This award provides general operating support to the Joffrey Ballet as part of the Foundation’s Culture, Equity, and the Arts program.

The Joffrey has three components: the main dance company, which performs in Chicago and tours worldwide; its Academy of Dance, which serves more than 2,000 aspiring dancers of all ages; and its Community Engagement programs that reach over 5,000 youth in Chicago neighborhoods and schools every year. Each performance season consists of five productions reaching up to 100,000 patrons. The company has toured to more than 400 U.S. cities and 26 foreign countries. This grant will support the Joffrey’s general operations, including plans to become the resident ballet company at the Lyric Opera House in the Fall of 2020.

In addition to the main performing company, the Joffrey is involved in community engagement activities that serve more than 5,000 young people a year and the Academy of Dance, which has more than 1,200 students. This grant will support general operations.
