The award supports the Resistance AI workshop on December 11^th, held virtually during the 34^th Annual Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems. Convened by a group of intersectional and interdisciplinary experts in the artificial intelligence (AI) field, the workshop seeks to increase understanding about how AI technologies impact power and how human/AI systems can be built in a way that shifts power towards historically marginalized communities.

The award supports research for the development of a curriculum to be published titled Data Reasoning for Philanthropy that seeks to help professionals in philanthropy think critically about data and models that constitute knowledge in the natural and social sciences and equip grantmakers with new knowledge for evaluating proposals and projects that involve data reasoning.

The Tech Policy Lab is an interdisciplinary research unit at the University of Washington with a mission to position policymakers and technologists, broadly defined, to work together to make wiser and more inclusive decisions about technology policy. The award supports research and analysis aimed at advancing evidence-based considerations for privacy, security, and other human values in the design choices and policies that impact the Internet of Things.

Conservation Magazine provides in-depth reporting on the most important environmental issues, and focuses on highlighting environmental successes that are grounded in science. This three-year grant will support Conservation Magazine’s efforts to establish itself as the Environmental Media Lab and diversify its funding base in order to reduce dependency on subscribers and donors. A key component of this work will be transitioning the magazine’s long-form content to the digital realm.
