    ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA — This three-year grant of $300,000 awarded to the St. Petersburg-based Centre for Independent Social Research, an independent research institute, is in support of a project to improve the quality of expertise available to Russian courts in cases involving freedom of expression and other fundamental rights. The project will monitor the use of expertise by the courts, establish a network of relevant experts, and promote public interest in these issues. Foundation dollars would be spent primarily on salaries, seminars and conferences, and travel. The grant advances the Foundation’s strategic priority of enhancing freedom of expression and access to justice in Russia.

    ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA — The Centre for Independent Social Research (CISR), founded in 1991, is Russia’s leading independent, non-university-based sociological research institute. With its long track record of research, training, and publishing, CISR has been a leader in efforts to build a new sociological profession in Russia that is politically independent and open to international scholarly interchange. The goal of this grant is to help set CISR on a path to long-term financial sustainability. The bulk of the grant will be used to seed the Centre’s new endowment; MacArthur funds will also cover fundraising consultant fees, travel, and the establishment of new fundraising and endowment offices at CISR.
