The PEN American Center (PEN) is a nonprofit membership organization that works to champion freedom of expression in the United States and globally by organizing festivals, events, and workshops, and by conducting research and advocacy in support of freedom of expression. Its members include novelists, journalists, editors, poets, essayists, playwrights, and readers. In 2017, it launched the Press Freedom Incentive Fund, which provides small grants and support to its members to organize community events in a range of small and mid-size U.S. cities to galvanize conversations about the importance of a free press. This work builds the supportive climate in which journalists can work in multiple locations across the country.
