Mozilla launched its Open Badges software, which allows any organization to issue verified online learning badges and any individual to receive and collect those badges. A digital badge is an online representation, like a certificate or a degree, of a learned or demonstrated skill. Users can display all of their badges collected from different sources in one place and have the option to share them over social media and personal websites or blogs, as well. The badges, once collected, link back to the issuer and provide information on the criteria for earning a particular badge. More than 600 organizations have already signed on and are in the process of implementing a badge system. Open Badges was produced with support and collaboration by MacArthur.
Digital Media & Learning
MacArthur's grantmaking aims to determine how digital media are changing the way young people learn, play, socialize, and participate in civic life. Answers are critical to education and other social institutions that must meet the needs of this and future generations.
