The International Center for Not-for-Profit Law (ICNL), founded in 1992 and based Washington D.C., monitors and improves the legal environment for civil society organizations worldwide by analyzing and reporting on laws and policies concerning the freedoms of association, expression, and assembly, thereby providing an enabling environment for civil society, civic participation, philanthropy, and development cooperation. ICNL provides technical and research assistance to support the reform of laws affecting civil society organizations in more than 100 countries around the world and has established itself as a leading source of information and assistance on laws affecting civil society and civic freedoms for nonprofits and funders. This award supports ICNL's Civic Freedom Monitor, which provides up-to-date information on legal issues affecting civil society and civic freedoms in the international arena.

Established in 1992, ICNL provides technical and research assistance to support the reform of laws affecting civil society organizations (CSOs) in more than 100 countries around the world, and has established itself as a leading source of information and assistance on laws affecting civil society and civic freedoms for organizations and funders. It plays an instrumental and important role in providing information and analysis on developments in the international arena affecting civil society. ICNL received a MacArthur Award for Creative and Effective Institutions (MACEI) in 2011.

This award supports new and continuing global monitoring, research, and analysis of country-level legal environments by developing and extending ICNL's Civic Freedom Monitor, which provides up-to-date information on legal issues affecting civil society and civic freedoms – the freedoms of association, expression and peaceful assembly.

The International Center for Not-for-Profit Law (ICNL) is an NGO that promotes an enabling environment for civil society, philanthropy and public participation in countries around the world by helping to ensure that governments respect freedom of expression, association and assembly. It seeks renewed support from the Foundation to strengthen and expand its NGO Law Monitor network and website.

The institutional grant will provide funding to increase the organization’s cash reserves and develop a comprehensive communications strategy to increase knowledge about the organization’s work among relevant policy makers, civil society, and the media around the globe.
