Grants

2012 (1 year)
$250,000

This grant to UNHCR supports a study on the root causes of unaccompanied child migration in the U.S.-Mexico-Central American corridor. The project addresses the surge of unaccompanied child migration to the United States registered in 2011-2012. Based on the study findings, a report and a series of recommendations will be produced and presented to the U.S. and Mexican governments. Recommendations will focus on improving child protection systems during apprehension, detention, and repatriation. UNHCR will also monitor how effectively protection of children is guaranteed when apprehended migrant children are screened for protection needs and fear of persecution.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) was established in 1950 and mandated to lead and coordinate international action for the worldwide protection of refugees and the resolution of refugee problems. UNHCR seeks support from MacArthur to hold an experts’ roundtable dialogue to discuss the political, security, humanitarian, and human rights dimensions of the Somalia Displacement Crisis, which has been ongoing for more than two decades, and has escalated as a result of recent severe drought and terrorist activities. The expected outcome of the roundtable is the development of innovative proposals in preparation for a high-level panel discussion to be convened by UNHCR’s High Commissioner.
