The Center for a New American Security (CNAS) is a nongovernmental organization that conducts research and engagement to develop strong, pragmatic, and principled national security and defense policies. With this award, CNAS collaborates with two partners, Global Zero and the Moscow-based Center for Energy and Security Studies (CENESS), to launch a U.S.-Russia dialogue on Iran’s nuclear program. This award produces recommendations and implementation plans for U.S. and Russian diplomats to work together to reduce nuclear risks vis-à-vis Iran. We are recommending a separate, concurrent award to Global Zero for this undertaking.

With MacArthur support CNAS conducts an outreach and engagement agenda, including by providing consultation and technical advice to officials on Capitol Hill, in order to identify pathways to effectively address the nuclear crisis with North Korea. CNAS also holds an interactive tabletop exercise on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), or Iran deal, which explores the economic and security implications of a scenario in which the JCPOA falls apart. The intended outcome of this award is to inform policy maker discourse and promote diplomatic solutions to these pressing nuclear policy issues.

The award provides partial support for CNAS’ National Security Women’s Leadership project. CNAS established the project following the overwhelmingly positive response to its 2015 report titled, “Battlefields and Boardrooms: Women’s Leadership in the Military and Private Sector,” which describes the experiences of female leaders in the military and private sector. This research and engagement project aims to catalyze action on the recommendations in the 2015 report; expand the study of this issue to focus on women veterans and women civilian leaders; and encourage change to better integrate women into the leadership ranks of the national security and private sectors.

The project, titled “Sustaining Pacific Power and Leadership: Aligning U.S. Strategy and Resources in Asia,” will provide U.S. policymakers with an assessment of the future strategic landscape in Asia and a comprehensive roadmap for how the United States should resource its renewed commitment to the region. This grant fits into MacArthur’s goal to strengthen stability in the Asia-Pacific region. Funds will be used for partial staff salaries, consultants, travel, meetings, and publications.

Founded in February, 2007, The Center for a New American Security is a non-profit think tank whose mission is to produce independent, nonpartisan and policy-relevant work on U.S. national security and defense issues. This grant supports a one-year policy research project premised on the idea that the system of security relations in the Asia-Pacific is experiencing profound change, from a U.S.-led “hub and spokes” model to a more complex, multi-polar web of relationships among states in the region. CNAS intends to provide U.S. policymakers and the public with an explanation of the implications of these changes for U.S. interests in the region and the options available to the U.S. as it pursues its interests. Funds will be used for partial project-related salary support, convening, travel and publications.
