The Center for a New American Security (CNAS) is a nongovernmental organization that conducts research and engagement to develop strong, pragmatic, and principled national security and defense policies. This award provides flexible support for a strand of work on advancing diplomacy on the Korean Peninsula. It aims to identify diplomatic means to manage risks.

The Center for a New American Security is a nongovernmental organization that conducts research and engagement to develop strong, pragmatic, and principled national security and defense policies. This award supports a project to identify and analyze new trends in proliferation finance in order to track and halt transactions that facilitate the spread of weapons-useable materials and technologies. The intended outcome of this award is to identify new proliferation finance methodologies and policy recommendations that will strengthen U.S. leadership on this crucial, yet rarely studied topic.

Co-founded in February 2007, the Center for a New American Security (CNAS) is an independent and nonpartisan research institution that develops strong, pragmatic, and principled national security and defense policies. The award provides partial support for CNAS’ National Security Women’s Leadership project. CNAS established the project following the overwhelmingly positive response to its 2015 report titled, “Battlefields and Boardrooms: Women’s Leadership in the Military and Private Sector,” which describes the experiences of female leaders in the military and private sector. This research and engagement project aims to catalyze action on the recommendations in the 2015 report; expand the study of this issue to focus on women veterans and women civilian leaders; and encourage change to better integrate women into the leadership ranks of the national security and private sectors.

The Center for a New American Security is a Washington-based national security and defense policy research institute with leadership composed of individuals who have held or gone on to prominent positions at the Departments of Defense and State, the White House, the Central Intelligence Agency, Congress, and the private sector. This grant will provide support for The Ethical Autonomous: Legal, Moral and Policy Concerns Regarding Autonomous Weapons, a project that will inform and shape the debate on autonomous weapons - what they are, why they might be developed, how they might be regulated, and what their potential benefits and drawbacks might be.

The project, titled “Sustaining Pacific Power and Leadership: Aligning U.S. Strategy and Resources in Asia,” will provide U.S. policymakers with an assessment of the future strategic landscape in Asia and a comprehensive roadmap for how the United States should resource its renewed commitment to the region. This grant fits into MacArthur’s goal to strengthen stability in the Asia-Pacific region. Funds will be used for partial staff salaries, consultants, travel, meetings, and publications.

Founded in February, 2007, The Center for a New American Security is a non-profit think tank whose mission is to produce independent, nonpartisan and policy-relevant work on U.S. national security and defense issues. This grant supports a one-year policy research project premised on the idea that the system of security relations in the Asia-Pacific is experiencing profound change, from a U.S.-led “hub and spokes” model to a more complex, multi-polar web of relationships among states in the region. CNAS intends to provide U.S. policymakers and the public with an explanation of the implications of these changes for U.S. interests in the region and the options available to the U.S. as it pursues its interests. Funds will be used for partial project-related salary support, convening, travel and publications.
