Nanyang Technological University’s S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) is a university-based center, established in 2007 to conduct policy research and provide advanced training on strategic and international affairs in the Asia-Pacific region. RSIS has served for three years as a ‘core’ institution under the Foundation’s Asia Security Initiative, during which time it managed a cluster of Asian policy research institutions working on security challenges that derive from within states. This grant would support policy research on the sources of inter-state instability in the Asia-Pacific region and the policy implications for governments in the region. Funds will be used for salary support, travel and convening, and project-related administrative costs.

The S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies’ (RSIS) mission is to be a leading research and graduate teaching institution in strategic and international affairs in the Asia Pacific. This grant supports a meeting hosted by RSIS on behalf of the MacArthur Foundation to solicit the views of Asia-based experts in security studies to aid the development of a grantmaking initiative on Asian security. It is intended to determine whether and how support for a new policy research agenda might improve official and public understanding of Asia-Pacific security challenges over the next 7-10 years.
