Justice Management Institute works to improve the criminal justice system through training and technical assistance to leaders and practitioners. The award supports the continuation of the Wičhóyaŋke Network, an Indigenous-led network that launched in December 2021 as part of the Safety and Justice Challenge. In the Lakota language, Wičhóyaŋke means “strengthening community” and through this renewal, the Network is focused on advancing community-based solutions and strategies that are helping to lower or eliminate disparities within the Indigenous population across local justice systems.

Justice Management Institute (JMI) works to improve the criminal justice system through training and technical assistance to leaders and practitioners. This award supports JMI’s continued participation as a site coordinator in the Safety and Justice Challenge, the Foundation’s criminal justice reform initiative aimed at reducing over-incarceration by targeting the misuse and overuse of jails and racial and ethnic disparities. JMI works with the Foundation and other initiative partners on the ongoing planning, monitoring, and coordination of the initiative, and provides intensive technical assistance and subject matter expertise to a group of Safety and Justice Challenge Network sites seeking to understand the drivers of local jail usage and racial inequities, and to implement and sustain strategies to address them. JMI’s activities have expanded to include participation in various efforts to extend the initiative’s reach and spread its influence to new jurisdictions and to the nation as a whole, including the sharing of learning and policy and practice innovations across peer and professional networks and a sharper focus on eliminating racial inequities.

The Justice Management Institute (the Institute) works to advance knowledge and practice in the administration of justice through research, education and training, and technical assistance aimed at better system alignment and coordination. A previous award supported the Institute's participation in the planning, design, and launch of the Safety and Justice Challenge Network, which will be composed of 20 competitively selected local jurisdictions committed to finding ways to reduce unnecessary jail incarceration safely and sustainably. The Safety and Justice Challenge Network is at the core of the Foundation's initiative to reduce over-incarceration by changing the way America thinks about and uses jails. This award enables the Institute to provide project coordination and technical assistance in 2015 to a cohort of five of these jurisdictions, as they work to assess drivers of local incarceration and develop collaborative plans to address them. In 2016, the award provides support for the Institute to continue to work with selected sites to implement their plans.

This grant will enable them to assist in the planning, design, and launch of the Safety and Justice Challenge, a Foundation initiative aimed at reducing the overuse and misuse of jails nationwide.

The Justice Management Institute advances knowledge and practice in the administration of justice by providing research and program evaluation, education and training, and technical assistance aimed at better system alignment and coordination. It will use this grant to conduct case studies on high-functioning, collaborative local criminal justice systems that have successfully reduced unnecessary incarceration and improved the administration of justice; and produce a report that identifies the common factors that have enabled those jurisdictions to be successful that will be made available to the field and the general public, and help the Foundation refine its strategy to address over-incarceration in the U.S.

Established in 1993, the Justice Management Institute works to improve trial court administration and operations through judicial education, technical assistance, and research. Since 2011, the Institute has worked with judges in Models for Change states to strengthen their capacity to serve as leaders of juvenile justice reform in their jurisdictions. The Institute will use this grant to grant work with the Models for Change Resource Center Partnership to support the communication and diffusion of the initiative’s tools and resources; and promote judicial leadership of juvenile justice reform efforts.

The Justice Management Institute works to improve trial court administration and operations through judicial education, technical assistance, and research. Since 2011, the Institute has worked with judges in Models for Change states to strengthen their capacity to serve as leaders of juvenile justice reform in their jurisdictions. This grant will enable the Institute to continue to provide training and technical assistance in support of such judicial leadership of juvenile justice reform efforts in Models for Change states, and to organize a national convening of key judicial leaders to mobilize judicial commitment to juvenile justice reform nationally.
