The International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ) assists societies confronting human rights abuses by providing expert advice, policy analysis, and comparative research to promote accountability and build trustworthy institutions. This award supports ICTJ’s efforts to strengthen national acknowledgement, accountability and reform processes, as well as advance practical measures and policy debates on the potential impact, role, or limits of transitional justice in a range of Sub-Saharan Africa contexts. Core activities are directed through ICTJ’s offices in Cote d’Ivoire, Kenya, and Uganda, and include technical assistance to national actors; capacity building of victim’s groups; sharing comparative knowledge through public events; and active dissemination of focused publications. ICTJ also monitors openings for transitional justice in other African countries to provide neutral advice and technical assistance in support of civil society, policy decisions and country strategies.
The grant provides general operating support to the International Center for Transitional Justice as it assists societies confronting massive human rights abuses to combat impunity, pursue truth, provide reparations, and build trustworthy institutions, thereby helping to rebuild civic trust and the democratic rule of law.
