The International Association of Chiefs of Police (the Association) is a membership organization with over 31,000 members in 150 countries. Its mission is to advance the policing profession through advocacy, research, outreach, and education, in order to provide for safer communities and deliver exemplary programs, resources, and support to law enforcement. This award supports the Association’s continued participation as a strategic ally in promoting law enforcement's engagement in front-end systems reform as part of the Safety and Justice Challenge (SJC). In this role, the Association helps secure the buy-in of law enforcement partners in SJC Network sites, provides them with peer support, learning and networking opportunities, and highlights and amplifies the results of their work through its communications channels, all in an effort to lead the law enforcement field away from excessive reliance on arrest and incarceration, and use the voices of law enforcement reform champions to drive reform nationally.

The International Association of Chiefs of Police works to enhance the professionalism of police work and promote good law enforcement practice. This award supports the Association’s participation as a strategic ally in the Safety and Justice Challenge, the Foundation’s criminal justice reform initiative aimed at reducing over-incarceration by targeting the misuse and overuse of jails. The Association will oversee a cross-site network of police leaders in jurisdictions taking part in the initiative; convene a national leadership group of “Champions for Justice Reform” devoted to leading the law enforcement field away from excessive reliance on arrest and incarceration; work with its members to determine  ways to transform law enforcement agency culture and to develop model officer performance evaluation criteria that do not create incentives for unnecessary arrests; and produce publications, webinars, and presentations that promote police-led incarceration reduction strategies.

The International Association of Chiefs of Police works to enhance the professionalism of police work and promote good law enforcement practice, including the safe and effective handling of juveniles suspected of violating the law. This grant will support the Association’s efforts to increase the role of law enforcement leadership in juvenile justice system reform, through a Leadership Institute, a national leadership network of law enforcement executives, and the development and dissemination of profiles of promising practices in police-led reform.

It will use this grant to develop, pilot, and institutionalize a Leadership Institute on Juvenile Justice for law enforcement executives, which will create a knowledgeable and motivated network of law enforcement leaders to serve as advocates and agents for juvenile justice reform.
