This project will report on the activities that foundations and their grantees are undertaking to strengthen American democracy and the U.S. political system. It will be conducted as a partnership of the Rita Allen Foundation, the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the Democracy Fund, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation, the Open Society Foundations, and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund. It will answer questions such as: Who are the key funders and what issues are they focused on? Who are the key grantees? Outside of foundations, who are other important funders in each issue area? How can better funder coordination or collaboration best be facilitated? The Foundation Center will develop answers to these questions by issue area, funder, grantee, and geographic area. A data visualization tool that shows relationships between funders, grantees, issues, and geographic areas will accompany the final report of the project.
