Amazon Conservation Team

The Amazon Conservation Team (ACT) protects South American rainforests by working in close partnership with indigenous peoples to devise and implement conservation strategies. With this grant, ACT advances the long-term conservation of 7.2 million hectares of rainforest by working with the Trio and Wayana indigenous communities to consolidate the South Suriname Conservation Corridor on their lands. In particular, ACT is strengthening on-the-ground monitoring and data collection, establishing sustainable income generation pilot projects, developing indigenous Life Plans, and formalizing the inclusion of indigenous guardians and local community monitoring efforts into the national game warden and carbon verification systems. Each of these efforts tests replicable methods for indigenous conservation of intact forests. This work explicitly complements the efforts of Conservation International in the South Suriname Conservation Corridor, demonstrating a model for effective indigenous conservation that can be replicated at scale.
