Century Education Development Agency International (Century) was founded in Uganda in 2007 and specializes in leadership, mentoring, and entrepreneurial development for young women. Its focus is on creating new female leaders who are economically independent and socially responsible. Based on the success of the previous phase of the work, which focused on young women in the conflicted-affected regions of Northern and Western Uganda, Century will use funds to strengthen and consolidate their Rising Stars program model and further adapt and document the program for dissemination and scaling via other organizations. With this award the program continues to work with a subset of 350 young women from the previous program cohort and will support their efforts towards gaining economic independence and becoming socially responsible leaders. Century will do this through engaging private sector corporations, local government, and community leaders in their programmatic process and provide opportunities for young women to learn skills through community action and mentorship. The program trains young women using a tested model of leadership development. Century’s model has been adopted by MacArthur grantee Global Fund for Children and by the United States Peace Corps-Uganda as part of the Let Girls Learn initiative. Century will work with external evaluators to further refine the model, document impact stories, and create a prototype of the program to be used by external organizations.
