The National Academy of Sciences is an independent, nonprofit organization that works outside of government to provide unbiased and authoritative advice to decision makers and the public about issues in the sciences. This project will address the global risks and opportunities related to the practice of ‘gain-of-function’ research with highly pathogenic avian influenza. It will ensure a fair, credible, open debate that airs all responsible views on the issues, and integrate the results so funders and policymakers in the U.S. government and abroad may apply them to their decisions.
