Institute for Justice and Journalism

The Institute for Justice and Journalism is a non-profit organization that supports journalists with fellowships and training opportunities to help them cover urgent social issues in more depth, and in new ways. This grant would enable the Institute to organize a Mexico City Migrahack, a workshop for visualizing immigration data, as well as support the planning phase of a central Migrahack website. Building upon what was learned at the Foundation-supported Chicago Migrahack, the Mexico City Migrahack would explore the impact of migration on Mexico, the leading country of origin of immigrants to the United States, both authorized and unauthorized.

The Institute for Justice and Journalism will organize a three-day workshop in Chicago in which journalists, web programmers, data analysts, designers and artists will work together using data to explore questions about immigration in Chicago and Illinois. The event will culminate in the creation of interactive maps, infographics, and other media that visualize data about the economic and fiscal impacts of immigration in Chicago and the Midwest in accessible and thought-provoking ways. This grant recommendation responds to a timely convergence of themes in Chicago, a city on the forefront of two major civic movements – the immigration debate and open data.
