BROOKLYN, NEW YORK — In the Middle is a documentary that focuses on Lampedusa, an Italian island in the middle of the Mediterranean with a population of 5,500. Since 2011, more than 50,000 African migrants fleeing the political upheavals of the Arab Spring have made dangerous journeys on overcrowded boats to arrive in Lampedusa. In the Middle follows the experiences of African migrants in Italy as well as longtime residents of Lampedusa to capture the consequences of large-scale global migration in the midst of Europe's economic crisis. In the Middle is directed by Lorena Luciano and produced by Filippo Piscopo for Film2 Productions, Inc.
The MacArthur Foundation awarded Film2 $50,000 between 2010 and 2013.
