Centro de Justicia para la Paz y el Desarrollo was founded in 2006 to contribute to a culture of respect for human rights through dialogue, research, and advocacy. The award supports the Center's work to promote improved investigations of disappearances by monitoring coordination between the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Missing Persons, the State Search Commission and Jalisco’s Institute for Forensic Science. The award also helps raise awareness among federal authorities and the general public about the high incidence of disappearances in Jalisco state.

Centro de Justicia para la Paz y el Desarrollo promotes human rights in Jalisco state through case documentation, litigation and assistance to victims. The award promotes improved investigation policies and procedures by the Special Unit for Investigating Disappearances of the Jalisco State Prosecutor’s Office. The state-level work provides a broad civil society coalition with lessons and input for devising a similar unit within the National Prosecutor’s Office expected to replace Mexico’s current Attorney General’s Office. The award supports developing an assessment framework that can be used by civil society to monitor the Special Unit’s performance in investigating disappearances and prosecuting perpetrators.

The award supports efforts to improve investigations of disappearances through monitoring compliance with a federal protocol, case documentation, and litigation to raise awareness about the impunity surrounding disappearances in Jalisco.
