This award provides flexible support for Crisis Group’s analysis, reporting, advocacy, and dialogues to address the Iran nuclear crisis. Intended outcomes include willingness and ability on the part of policymakers to take concrete steps to revive the Iran Nuclear Deal (the Deal), sustain it, and de-escalate tensions. Crisis Group also works to craft viable alternatives to address growing concerns around Iran’s nuclear program if the Deal collapses.

Intended outcomes also include generation of and advocacy for ideas and concrete policy recommendations that address the implementation of the agreement, including larger regional implications.

Crisis Group plans a one-day workshop in Europe designed to prepare a contingency plan for the E3 (France, Germany, and the United Kingdom) to save the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in case of U.S. withdrawal from the agreement. Intended outcomes include a policy memo and concrete recommendations for the E3; enhanced European understanding of and capacity to sustain the JCPOA; and increased action taken by the E3 and European business leaders that reflect Crisis Group recommendations.

This award provides support for Crisis Group’s research, reporting, and advocacy on the impact and implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) between Iran and the P5+1 (the five permanent members of the United Nations (U.N.) Security Council plus Germany). Intended outcomes include greater understanding of the JCPOA on the part of stakeholder governments; increased willingness and ability on the part of policymakers to take concrete steps to help successfully implement the agreement; and generation of and advocacy for ideas and concrete policy recommendations that address the implementation of the agreement, including larger regional implications.

The International Crisis Group is a preeminent independent, non-partisan source of analysis and advice to policymakers on the prevention and resolution of deadly conflict. The award provides general operating support to the organization as it continues its program of research and analysis that includes the publication of approximately 60 reports and briefing papers annually on emerging or actual conflict situations, the monthly CrisisWatch bulletin, and the provision of policy recommendations at the national, regional, and international levels. The work is carried out from the organization’s offices located in approximately twenty countries around the globe, a number of which are in or near places of conflict to enable regular on the ground analysis of situations.
