Half the Sky follows the Nicholas Kristof and six actresses around the world to meet women fighting for their future and their rights.

Inspired by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn’s best-selling book Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, this four-hour PBS television event takes on the central moral challenge of the 21st century: the oppression of women and girls worldwide. Filmed in six locations in the developing world, Half the Sky follows Kristof and six actresses– America Ferrera, Diane Lane, Eva Mendes, Gabrielle Union and Olivia Wilde– as they meet some of the most inspiring and courageous women of our time — women who are fighting not only for their own lives but for the future of women everywhere. Poised on the frontlines of the battle against sex trafficking and forced prostitution, gender-based violence and maternal mortality, these women are making a real difference and, through economic and personal empowerment, improved health care, and girls’ education, they are transforming oppression into opportunity.
